“Shake to resell”: how Back Market revolutionizes the resale of your smartphone?

Back Market has only one idea in mind: to make reconditioned products a reflex by removing one by one all the barriers that could cause doubt. This is true for purchases, and also for resale, which must be as fluid as possible. The new “shake to resell” feature raises a new level.

Back Market is the leader in the reconditioned market. But that is not enough. The purpose of the marketplace is not to be the first, it is to democratize access to technology that is more responsible than new technology. This is why she decides in 2022 to become a mission-driven company.

It is guided by this desire to reduce the impact of technology on the environment. And what’s better than reconditioned for that? As indicated by ADEME in its study “Assessment of the environmental impact of a set of reconditioned products” carried out in July 2022, buying a reconditioned smartphone means 92% less CO2 compared to a new purchase. (1). And to be able to buy it, it must be sold first. This is where the “Shake to Resell” feature will make things – very – simple.

Shake, resell

Available on the mobile app, this feature does exactly what its name suggests. When you want to resell your smartphone, all you have to do is shake it so that the brand, model and its main characteristics are recognized. A few seconds later, you get an estimate from your smartphone.

This estimate is based on a smartphone in perfect condition. You can then refine the evaluation by answering a few questions about use, in particular concerning the presence or not of scratches on your product.

And there you have it, less than two minutes later, you have an offer for your smartphone. We haven't made it more practical until now. And this feature comes at just the right time, at a time when Santa Claus is likely to leave a smartphone (randomly a refurbished “premium” iPhone 15) under the tree for Christmas. Rather than leaving the old one at the bottom of a drawer, shake it out to resell it.

No matter what you resell, it's always fluid

The “Shake to Resell” functionality only works with a smartphone or iPad, but you can participate in the circular economy and help break the cycle of overconsumption with all your tech products. Whether it's a laptop, tablet or console, the process is always the same and takes no more than 2 minutes on the Back Market website. Here are the 5 steps to remember:

  1. Select “Resell” from the navigation menu at the top of the page.
  2. Choose the category your device is in.
  3. Answer a few questions about your device model and condition.
  4. Get an offer from a professional reconditioner.
  5. Decide whether you accept or reject the proposed buyout price. If you decide to reject the offer, you can always repeat the evaluation to receive other proposals.

Once the offer is accepted, you will need to enter your IBAN in your account (or create an account beforehand if you do not already have one), your contact details and your identity. It will be necessary to justify the latter with an official document.

Once this step is completed, you will receive a free label to print and stick on the package containing your device. If it is fragile, try to prop it up as best you can with newspaper to prevent it from moving too much during transport. Then drop off the package at the drop-off point closest to you.

Once received by the repackager, the latter checks that the description given conforms to the condition of the product. Then you will receive your transfer a few days later, depending on the responsiveness of your bank. It's that simple.

Your product's story is over as far as you're concerned, but it's actually day one of the rest of its life. The reconditioner will now check it according to the strict Back Market charter and restore it if necessary. It can then be offered on the marketplace to find a new owner. Thus, tech is reborn.
