#3 / The Area of Interest
The life of Rudolf Höss, the commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp, and his wife Hedwig during World War II. Together they try to build an idyllic life for their family in a house with a garden next to the horror camp.
While its harsh subject may put off some, The Area of Interest is undoubtedly one of the great films of recent years, which has also been rewarded with two Oscars. His radical bias, which suggests horror rather than showing it, proves astonishingly effective, and we quickly find ourselves captive to the daily life of the Höss, played wonderfully by Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a fall) and Christian Friedel (Babylon Berlin).

#4 / Conclave
Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with handling this confidential process after the beloved pope's unexpected death. When all of the Catholic Church's most powerful leaders are gathered and locked in the Vatican, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy and uncovers a secret that could change the religious institution forever.
Director Edward Berger (Nothing new in the West) adapts the eponymous novel by Robert Harris and creates an atypical thriller, visually remarkable and in a unique setting: the conclave, a highly symbolic and political moment of election of the new pope. Corridor intrigues, double dealings, maneuvers, revelations… All the Agatha Christie ingredients are present and skillfully measured for a gripping story, served by a top-notch cast (Ralph Fiennes in the lead).

With NosferatuRobert Eggers once again delivers a radical, striking and incredibly effective feature film. A terribly captivating gothic and horror tale with an unusual cast (Lily-Rose Depp in the lead), which breathes new life into a great cinema classic. Without doubt the most beautiful film of the year.

#8 / The Substance
Elisabeth Sparkle, star of an aerobics show, is fired on her 50th birthday because of her age. With morale at its lowest, she receives an unexpected proposition from a mysterious laboratory: a miraculous “substance”. If she injects it, she will become the best version of herself, younger, more beautiful, more perfect thanks to a modification of her DNA.
At the crossroads of body horror and the cinema of David Cronenberg (The Fly, Scanners), director Coralie Fargeat creates an absurd and tragic farce on the cult of the body. A show that plays with codes and takes a disturbing look at the issue of dysmorphia and the representation of women in Hollywood (and elsewhere). One of the most interesting offerings of the year, with a delicious Demi Moore/Margareth Qualley duo.

#9 / The Snow Circle
In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 carried a rugby team to Chile. But the plane crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 passengers out of 45 survived the crash. To survive in one of the most hostile environments in the world, they have no choice but to make extreme decisions.
When the talented Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) tackles an incredible true story, we have to be there. And it’s brilliantly successful. Close to the survivors, trapped in this open-air prison, the viewer witnesses their distress and their hopes, in what is a wonderful life lesson. A poignant drama, with sublime and spectacular images, not to be missed under any circumstances.
