The Batman 2: new blow for Matt Reeves' Dark Knight
In 2022, director Matt Reeves offered a new successful version of the Dark Knight on the big screen with the soberly named The Batman. Without much surprise, like a certain Jokeralso not integrated into the DC cinematic universe (both the old and the new of James Gunn), a sequel is then ordered.
Except that, ultimately, the release initially scheduled for October 2025, then 2026, of what we will call for the moment “The Batman 2”, will not take place.
A script to complete to get started
Warner Bros. has in fact decided to postpone the new adventures of Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne by one year. We will therefore have to wait until October 2027 to return to Gotham at the cinema. Enough to give you plenty of time to catch up on the derivative series The Penguin on Max.
The reason behind this postponement is as simple as it is blocking: the script is not finished. James Gunn himself spoke out on social media: “The only reason for the delay is that there is no complete storyline (those of you who follow me here probably already know that). Matt (Reeves) is committed to making the best film possible, and no one can guess precisely how long a script will take to write. Once the script is completed, there are about two years for pre-production, filming and post-production for major films.“
In another post, he adds that a gap of five years between sequels is quite typical. He takes the example between his last two films in particular Guardians of the Galaxy.
What content for Batman 2 ?
Not being linked to Gunn's DCU, The Batman 2 by Matt Reeves can do whatever he wants. The end of the first opus suggested the arrival of the Joker against Batman, while the return of the Penguin is also a possibility. It would be a shame to have developed this character in series and then do nothing about it in the cinema. Elements from canceled spinoff series about the GCPD and Arkham Asylum could also be used for the film. Finally, the character of Clay Maw seems to be coming back into fashion and could, why not, take a look there too.
See you in more than two years!
