iPhone 18: Apple would improve photo quality thanks to this change
Although the iPhone 18s are not yet ready to arrive, some details are already on the horizon. Whilea borderless screen or even the A20 chip were being talked about at the end of 2024, the start of the year is now tackling the photo part.
The informant Jukanlosreve actually shared for the New Year on Twitter/X that Samsung was developing a new main photo sensor (wide-angle) “three-layer stacking in a PD-TR-Logic configuration for Apple”.
He adds in passing that the latter would be better than Sony's Exmor RS used since the iPhone 6, and improved since, which would justify the change of supplier for the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro in 2026.
Note, the three-layer stacking system currently being developed by Samsung would allow “to increase the speed of signal processing”explain iGeneration. De facto, the camera would be more responsive, “while removing noise from photos”.
Jukanlosreve is, however, not the only one to talk about a collaboration between Samsung and Apple for the iPhone 18. Indeed, Ming-Chi Kuo shared this summer 2024 that the two entities were working together around a 48 Mpx 1/2.6-inch ultra-wide-angle sensor.
In addition to taking advantage of Samsung's expertise, the objective would be, according to him, to “break Sony’s monopoly on the supply of CIS [capteur d’image CMOS] to Apple, which has lasted for years”.
It is indeed important to emphasize that in addition to better photo quality for users, having a second supplier would offer Apple more than welcome negotiating power, and would limit its dependence on Sony.
