The time has come for announcements for OnePlus, which had mentioned at the end of last year the European formalization of its model 13, already available in China. The brand, however, was careful not to mention the smartphone that would accompany it for the occasion, including the OnePlus 13R, its slightly more affordable version. The smartphone aims to be the “smart choice” in the manufacturer's range: through cleverly thought-out compromises, the device is available at a more attractive price.
We will not return to the characteristics of the OnePlus 13, already marketed in China and above all tested by us. However, we retain its launch price, set at €1029 for its 256 GB version, and €1179 for its 512 GB version, when the OnePlus 12 was billed at €969 or €1099 for the same configuration. This is the price to pay for a versatile photo unit, a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, the latest generation, and a very high capacity battery. On the other hand, for a terminal in the range at a more affordable price, you must look towards a terminal which had not yet been presented by OnePlus: the 13R.
The star chip of 2024 in charge
The device obviously looks a lot like the OnePlus 13, with a case with flatter edges and screen, and a reduced weight (206 grams). It features a 6.78-inch Oled screen (LTPO, with an announced brightness of up to 4,500 cd/m²), beneath which lies the argument that allows the manufacturer to limit costs: a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. is therefore the chipset star of 2024 which powers the smartphone – we're not really worried about a possible lack of power – with the support of 12 GB of RAM. The terminal is also only offered in one version, with 256 GB of storage.
If the OnePlus 13R chooses a slightly less ambitious chip than the 13 itself, we note some compromises in its photo component. Its main sensor is not a LYT-808, but a LYT-700 (also 50 Mpx), its telephoto lens is accompanied by a 50 Mpx sensor, with optics equivalent to 47 mm (73 mm on OnePlus 13) , and its ultra wide-angle module tops out at 8 Mpx. Its front module also revises its definition downwards, swapping a 32 Mpx sensor for a 16 Mpx sensor.
Finally, one last technical point: if it loses charging at 100 W to offer charging up to 80 W, only wired, the OnePlus 13R adopts a 6000 mAh accumulator which we note is not a question of a silicon-carbon battery, but a classic lithium battery, with a single cell. Note that the device debuts under Android 15 with OxygenOS 15, and will benefit from four years of software updates, with two years of additional security patches. Count on an introductory price of €769, or €70 more than the 12R when it was released, which places the terminal in the face of tough competition, driven in particular by the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE or even the Xiaomi 14T Pro. The 12R is no longer in the OnePlus catalog, while the 12 model remains there at a reduced price.
