Google Pixel 4a: a new update impacts the autonomy of the smartphone
Available since October 2020, the Pixel 4a no longer benefits from software monitoring from Google. It indeed ended its adventure in the world of updates in August 2023, thus following the three-year period announced by the Mountain View firm at its launch (compared to eight years sincethe Pixel 8).
Small recent twist, a new version has appeared on this affordable model. On a support page published on January 6, 2025, Google explains that the Pixel 4a will receive an update from January 8 aimed at improving the stability of the performance of its lithium-ion battery.
Without going into details, Google recalls that batteries of this type, used on all smartphones, have components “consumables”that is to say they deteriorate over time. The fix provided by this update could therefore be justified to ensure stable performance despite this decline.
We learn in passing that “the battery may last less between charges” after this update of the Pixel 4a. Google also talks about “reduced charging performance” or “changes to how your phone's battery level indicator displays your battery capacity”.
Google points out in passing that not all Pixel 4a are affected by this situation, and recommends going through a dedicated questionnaire to find out if your smartphone is affected. As a bonus, it is possible to request a free battery change (restricted to the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore and India).
For others, a $50 refund or a $100 discount for the purchase of a new Pixel is offered by the American company. Everything happens directly via the same form shared earlier in the article, and requires the following information: IMEI of the Pixel 4a, email address, postal address and telephone number. Google then emphasizes that it will contact the customer within a few weeks to follow up on the compensation procedure.
