On January 1, 2025, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded in Las Vegas in front of the Trump International Hotel, injuring seven people. Matthew Livelsberger, a member of the US Army Special Forces, allegedly used ChatGPT to obtain information before going on the attack.

ChatGPT would have provided information

According to Kevin McMahill, sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Matthew Livelsberger asked ChatGPT about the amount of explosive needed to carry out an attack, where to buy fireworks and a phone that does not require personal information.

OpenAI, which nevertheless promises that its o1 and o3 models are more secure and ethicalquickly reacted. A spokesperson for the company tells CBS News it is working with authorities in the investigation. The company specifies that the information provided by ChatGPT was already public and that the artificial intelligence had issued warnings during the exchanges with Matthew Livelsberger.

On December 31, 2024, Matthew Livelsberger rented a Cybertruck in Colorado before heading to Las Vegas. Then, on January 1, 2025, the suspect arrived in the city with the vehicle equipped with a detonation system consisting of fireworks, gas and fuel tanks.

At 8:39 a.m. the same day, the pickup truck exploded in front of the Trump International Hotel, injuring 7 people after the US Army Special Forces member killed himself before launching the attack.
