About Doc Gyneco, a young West Indian from Porte de la Chapelle in Paris, we didn't know much when it came out First consultation in 1996: he was part of the Ministère Amer/Secteur A crew, and had rapped on one or two songs by the Sarcelles group. The sound of the record, first of all, is surprising: recorded in Los Angeles with musicians, it denies the principle of computer-assisted music which reigns in rap. Amateurs and the (very) general public were quickly infatuated with the offbeat verve and rich humor of the nonchalant rapper: “Born here”, “Nirvana” (censored for the rhyme “like Bérégovoy/as fast as Senna”), “Dans ma rue” (which also sparked unwelcome attempts at censorship), “Est-ce que ça le fait” in a duet with Passi, “Passement de Jams”, an ode to football, his other passion, were all hits, which explains why the album exceeded 800,000 copies sold, ranking the beginner at the level of IAM or MC Solaar. Rebellious (“Classify me in the variety”), endearing, annoying, Doc Gyneco left no one indifferent, to the point of being the first rapper to have his puppet in the Guignols of the Canal + news! –Jean-Eric Perrin
