After several months of waiting, the decision was made: TikTok will close its doors on January 19, 2025. Faced with this decision, the application asks the Biden administration to reassure its “most critical service providers” regarding their legal responsibility. That is to say Apple and Google who distribute the social network on the App Store and the Play Store but also the hosting partners, Amazon and Oracle.

The fate of TikTok in the hands of Trump

TikTok's announcement therefore follows the decision of the Supreme Court of Friday January 17, 2025 which validated the law which prohibits the application if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, does not sell its shares. The social network's leader, Shou Chew, spoke to President-elect Donald Trump. However, the man does not specify what will happen when the law comes into force this Saturday at midnight.

The White House has indicated that the fate of TikTok will be in the hands of Donald Trump who takes office on January 20, 2025. and promised to save the social network. The president-elect spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 17, 2025, about “trade balance, fentanyl, TikTok and many other topics”.

In a press release published this Friday, the White House specifies: “President Joe Biden's position on TikTok has been clear for months, including since Congress sent a bipartisan bill to the President's desk: TikTok should remain accessible to Americans, but only under U.S. or other ownership property addressing the national security concerns identified by Congress in crafting this law”.

The Department of Justice maintains its position: it will enforce the ban on TikTok and impose fines of $5,000 per user on US service providers. Attorney General Merrick Garland said this Friday: “Authoritarian regimes should not have unfettered access to the sensitive data of millions of Americans. The Court’s decision confirms that this law protects the national security of the United States in a manner consistent with the Constitution”.

As the date of the TikTok ban approaches, some politicians who voted for the TikTok ban are reversing their position, explaining that ByteDance must be given more time to divest its shares. According to the New York Times, Senator Chuck Schumer warned President Joe Biden that authorizing a ban “would damage his legacy”.
