Stargate: Trump announces 500 billion for AI, but Elon Musk prefers to stay at the door
During a press conference at the White House, Donald Trump, surrounded by Sam Altman (OpenAI), Masayoshi Son (SoftBank) and Larry Ellison (Oracle), announced the creation of Stargate. This colossal project aims to invest $500 billion in infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) in the United States, with an immediate start of $100 billion. Trump said these investments would quickly create more than 100,000 jobs, while reducing American dependence on China.
For Elon Musk, it's not science fiction
The heart of the project is based on the construction of data centers, essential for the development of cloud and generative AI technologies. The first projects have already started in Texas, and emergency decrees will facilitate their deployment, in particular by simplifying access to energy. OpenAI, which until now relied on Microsoft infrastructures, will now benefit from its own centers, while maintaining a strategic partnership with its shareholder.
Stargate's financing brings together key players like SoftBank, Oracle, Nvidia, and the UAE-backed investment fund MGX. The announcement caused a surge in the shares of the companies involved: SoftBank jumped 10.61% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, while Oracle saw its stock climb 7%.
But the initiative has attracted criticism. Former OpenAI collaborator Elon Musk publicly doubted SoftBank's ability to finance such a project, saying: “In fact, they don't have the money“These reservations are a reminder of the colossal challenges linked to investments of this magnitude, where reality can sometimes not meet the ambitions displayed.
