Canon RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM, the wide-angle zoom we've been waiting for

After an interesting transstandard 28-70 mm f/2.8 zoom, we naturally awaited the wide-angle variation of this series of zooms open to f/2.8. Canon responds, logically, to our expectations and presents a wide angle also open at f/2.8 but which covers a focal range ranging from 16 to 28 mm. This wide-angle zoom will be particularly practical for photographing landscapes, urban scenes, spacious interiors and taking images while taking into account the subject's environment.

A complete range of wide-angle zoom lenses

The newcomer completes a range of optics already provided. Indeed, the 16-28 mm fits between the Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM (€616), and the L series models RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM (€1,559) and RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM (€2,679) much more expensive. Positioned in the mid-range, the Canon RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM offers a rather complete and interesting technical sheet combining good compactness and lightness (445 g) and an optical formulation with 16 lenses divided into 13 groups and a diaphragm with 9 slats. Note the presence of an aspherical front lens, which limits the appearance of spherical aberrations, produced by the replica method. This technique, developed by Canon in 1990 makes it possible to produce aspherical lenses at a lower cost and with synthetic materials which limit the weight. It complements the other creation methods which are molding, injection and polishing. The formula also includes four UD lenses with Super Spectra coatings to limit ghosting.
