Canon RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM, the wide-angle zoom we've been waiting for
After an interesting transstandard 28-70 mm f/2.8 zoom, we naturally awaited the wide-angle variation of this series of zooms open to f/2.8. Canon responds, logically, to our expectations and presents a wide angle also open at f/2.8 but which covers a focal range ranging from 16 to 28 mm. This wide-angle zoom will be particularly practical for photographing landscapes, urban scenes, spacious interiors and taking images while taking into account the subject's environment.

A complete range of wide-angle zoom lenses
The newcomer completes a range of optics already provided. Indeed, the 16-28 mm fits between the Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM (€616), and the L series models RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM (€1,559) and RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM (€2,679) much more expensive. Positioned in the mid-range, the Canon RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM offers a rather complete and interesting technical sheet combining good compactness and lightness (445 g) and an optical formulation with 16 lenses divided into 13 groups and a diaphragm with 9 slats. Note the presence of an aspherical front lens, which limits the appearance of spherical aberrations, produced by the replica method. This technique, developed by Canon in 1990 makes it possible to produce aspherical lenses at a lower cost and with synthetic materials which limit the weight. It complements the other creation methods which are molding, injection and polishing. The formula also includes four UD lenses with Super Spectra coatings to limit ghosting.

Light, compact and stabilized
The manufacturing of the optics is weatherproof and it has seals which limit the intrusion of water and dust. You will particularly appreciate the presence of such a seal at the bayonet, which is always appreciated. Be careful though, the switches on the lens barrel are not waterproof unlike the more high-end models with the “L” logo. The perceived quality is rather good and the RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM has both a zoom ring and a configurable ring to control either the focus or different functionalities such as the aperture.

In the closed position, the optics are barely more than 9 cm (76.5 x 91 mm). You have noted “closed position”, which implies that the optic will have to be unlocked before being able to trigger. Finally, note that the focusing distance is shorter in tele mode (20 cm) than at wide-angle (25 cm) for an enlargement ranging from 0.11x to 0.26x.
Photo and video versatility
The RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM incorporates a step-by-step motor (STM or Stepping Motor) which allows for flexible and rapid focusing in both photos and video. Please note that focus breathing and optical distortions are also digitally corrected on the brand's latest cameras.
