Waterproofing: Waterproofing is the ability of a fabric to prevent the penetration of water. A fabric can be made waterproof by combining it with a membrane or using a coating. The Schmerber is the unit of measurement for waterproofing, it represents a water column of 1 mm. A garment that has a value of 10,000 Schmerber, that is to say 10,000 mm, therefore resists 10 m of water. Clothing is perfectly waterproof from 20,000 Schmerber.
Breathability: Breathability is the ability of a fabric to wick away water vapor. A fabric guaranteeing good breathability limits the condensation of water vapor inside the garment, facilitating the evacuation of perspiration and keeping the body dry. The breathability measurement is evaluated in 2 ways: the MVTR measurement (water vapor transmission rate) calculates the quantity of water (in the form of vapor) that the fabric lets pass in 24 hours. The MVTR is expressed in g/m²/24 h; the RET index (Evaporative Transfer Resistance) measures the ability of a fabric to let water vapor generated by the body and perspiration escape (RET mainly used by US brands), the lower it is, the more it indicates that the garment is breathable.
