AirPods Pro 2: soon in the United Kingdom, Apple's hearing aid extends its spectrum to Europe
The UK is taking a step forward for people with hearing problems. Now, thanks to a clarification of the rules by the Ministry of Health, hearing aids can be sold without a prescription. In the process, Apple announces the arrival of an update for turn AirPods Pro 2 into hearing aids suitable for light to moderate losses.
Until now, obtaining a hearing aid in the United Kingdom required crossing several obstacles: medical consultation, prescription, and a sometimes dissuasive cost. This framework discouraged many people, particularly the elderly or those bothered by the stigma associated with these devices. Now, with this opening of free sales, Apple promises an accessible, discreet and easy-to-use solution.
The update — expected with iOS 18.3, which should arrive shortly— will allow AirPods Pro 2 to capture and amplify surrounding sounds. Their technology, described as “clinical quality”could appeal to those looking for an alternative to traditional hearing aids. The device also includes a hearing test, capable of detecting less well-perceived frequencies to automatically adjust the parameters.
In France, two hearing aid features added with iOS 18.2 (the hearing test and loud sound reduction), but deployment of the hearing aid feature is still subject to approval from local health authorities. To date, no specific date has been announced for their availability on the French market.
