In 2020, Microsoft was already interested in buying TikTok. While the Chinese social network is entitled to a respite thanks to Donald Trumpthe Redmond firm could afford the application.

Microsoft could buy TikTok

As a reminder, the law promulgated by former President Joe Biden requires TikTok to divest its activities or cease its operations in the United States. The application refused, causing it to be blocked for 12 hourslast Sunday. The social network finally came back online.

Donald Trump gave TikTok an additional 90 days even though for the moment, in the United States, the application is removed from the Play Store and the App Store due to current legislation. The company must therefore, in the coming months, find a buyer or close its doors to American users.

There are many criticisms against TikTok. The algorithm would create echo chambers and promote radicalization, just like misinformation. The government considers the app a threat to national security because of its parent company, ByteDance,'s ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The United States fears that the social network spreads propaganda or monitors American users.

Brussels is also investigating TikTok's role in the rise of extremist parties and the spread of pro-Putin propaganda. According to reports, the White House is exploring the possibility of Oracle acquiring the social network's global operations while ByteDance would retain a minority stake. Microsoft would have taken part in the discussions but the contours remain unclear. The companies did not wish to communicate on this subject.

While Meta has Facebook and Instagram, Google has YouTube, and Amazon has Twitch, Microsoft only has LinkedIn. The professional social network is excellent but does not influence popular culture like other social networks.

Microsoft could therefore strengthen itself by acquiring TikTok and use it as leverage for its Windows, Surface and Xbox platforms. But it is better to take this scenario with caution, the acquisition of Skype by the Redmond firm has not made the application essential.

Microsoft's involvement could also be limited to its existing Azure AI contract with TikTok. The Chinese social network uses many of Azure's learning tools and most of it is hosted on Oracle Cloud. The Redmond firm's current relationship with TikTok likely focuses on AI.
