If you read Digitalyou know that connected watches are legion, offering their users just as numerous sports features as their health options, the integration of blood sugar sensors looming on the horizon. OUR comparison dedicated to these devices Wait for you to see more clearly; But a little more than ten years ago, there were much fewer devices, and among the pioneering marks of this future segment, there was a figure in crowdfunding: Pebble. The American brand has indeed counted among the heavyweights of the Kickstater platform, where it had managed to raise $ 10 million when it launched its Pebble Watch.

It was in 2012, two years before the appearance of the first Apple Watch and, on the Google side, of the launch of the Android operating system Wearrenamed Wear Os a few years later. The watch on the monochrome e-paper screen, turning under Pebbleos, tried to put on the page, with a color version called Pebble Time. Las, in 2016, this is the end for Pebble, part of the patents landed in Fitbit, himself acquired by Google in 2021. Brand aficionados continued to Bring the Pebble Watches to life By trying to connect them to much more recent smartphones, but that’s almost everything that has happened to the brand in almost ten years. But today, the creator of Pebble intends to sign the return of these smartwatch on the front of the stage.

Owner bone with open-source system

In a post on his blog – we are Old School Or we are not – Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, indicates that he has obtained from Google to make Pebbleos Open -Source. “This last year, a team in Google (including formidable ex-peblers who have become googlers) worked on it”he announces. The code in question is available on Githuband an iOS and Android compatible application, also open-source, accompanies it.

But that's not all. Migicovsky announces outright work, using a “Small team”to the creation of a new watch exploiting this open-source version of Pebbleos. We do not know much more, except that the device should “have roughly the same characteristics and functions as the pebble”that is to say probably an e-Paper screen and a very generous autonomy. “Emphasis is on sustainability”proclaims Migicovsky: remains to be seen if the product that will carry this value, and which we ultimately know nothing very concrete, has a commercial future ahead of it. In the meantime, the new Pebble team invites the interested parties to register for its alerts on the site she dedicated to the project.
