Openeurollm: a price and (a little) of money for the European AI project

It is not a secret: faced with the domination of artificial intelligences developed in the United States and China, Europe seeks to acquire its own solutions. It is with this ambition that Optaneurollm was born. This ambitious project hopes to provide European companies, industries and administrations an alternative in terms of open source and multilingual language models, in line with the values of the Union. But all this is not new, since Openeurollm was launched for the first time on June 26, 2023.

Support from the European Commission

If the project is talking about him today, it is because OpeneurollM has just obtained the label “Strategic technologies for Europe” (STEP), a distinction granted by the European Commission. This is a first for a project funded by the program for a digital Europe, and this recognition is accompanied by access to additional funding. The project also brings together 20 European players, from the technological sector, research and high -performance calculation infrastructure (EuroHPC). He is piloted by Jan Hajič, professor of computational linguistics at Charles University (Czech Republic), and Peter Sarlin, co -founder of Silo AI (Finland). On the French side, Lighton and the Alliance for Languages Technologies (Alt-Edic) are among the partners.

A gondola head for digital sovereignty

The displayed objective is to design transparent linguistic models adapted to European realities. Their open source character will allow companies and administrations to personalize them according to their needs, while ensuring strict respect for the principles of opening and transparency. Indeed, unlike the dominant solutions developed outside Europe, OpeneurollM is focusing on a multilingual approach covering all the official languages of the European Union. The project is based on collaborations with communities such as Laion and OpenML, as well as on dedicated strategic advice (Open Strategic Partnership Board). The initiative is of course in a broader dynamic where Europe seeks to limit its dependence to the solutions developed by American and Chinese companies.

In competition with giants with colossal means

Openeurollm must however deal with a budget much lower than that of its American or Chinese competitors. Indeed, with an overall budget of 37.4 million euros to date, including 20.6 million from the European program, Openeurollm faces to the Stargate project of $ 500 billion or evento meta investments, which should reach around sixty billion dollars in AI in 2025. In view of these astronomical amounts, the budget of the European project seems not to weigh very heavy. Fortunately, the recent success of Deepseek, who claims to have managed to train his latest models at a cost much lower than that of Openai models, can restore a little hope. Even if Deepseek is suspected of not having been completely transparent on these figures …
