Quick Share, formerly known as Nearby Share, is a service that allows you to quickly exchange files between nearby Android smartphones. Since its transformation, Google has multiplied improvements to make this tool more intuitive and efficient.

With the latest update of Google Play services (version 25.04, February 2025), Quick Share takes a new step. From now on, if the direct connection between the devices is lost, the transfer of files will be able to continue via an internet connection, either in WiFi or via mobile data. This advance would avoid having to start a shipment in the event of a cut, which is particularly relevant for bulky files.

An operation inspired by Airdrop and Samsung

This feature is not completely unprecedented. Apple has thus integrated an option similar to Airdrop with iOS 17 in 2023. Samsung also offers an alternative comparable to its version of Quick Share, although it is reserved for Galaxy devices.

By integrating this possibility, Google harmonizes its service with already existing solutions, guaranteeing better continuity of transfers. However, it remains to be seen if the user may suspend an on -class shipment to resume it later via a direct connection, as is possible with certain alternatives.

Some precautions to take

If this novelty is undeniably useful, it still requires certain precautions:

  • Longer transfer time : Without direct connection, sending files could take much more time depending on the speed of mobile internet or wifi.
  • Data consumption : For those with a limited package, using mobile data for a large file can quickly exhaust the available quota.
  • Variable performance : On an unstable wifi network, the transfer may be slowed down, even interrupted.

Fortunately, it is likely that Google leaves the choice to activate this option or not, thus offering flexibility to users according to their needs and their available connection.

Deployment in drop

This update is part of the improvements provided by the V25.05 of the Google Play Services. However, Google generally proceeds to a gradual deployment of its new features. It is therefore possible that this option does not appear immediately on all devices.
