The most powerful bridge in the world bends to European rules
It is a change of catch that sounds like a resurrection. The Japanese manufacturer Nikon is indeed releasing its Coolpix P1000 under the Coolpix P1100 label. A launch that marks the return of the bridge to the most powerful zoom in the world. With an optical range ranging from a 24 mm to 3000 mm (in 24×36 equivalent), the P1100 gives Nikon the title of zoom champion.
The biggest difference between these two devices is in the socket located next to it: launched in 2018, the P1000 included a micro USB socket. A take prohibited on the majority of new consumer electronic products marketed in the European Union since January 1, 2025.
Otherwise, the two devices are identical: same CMOS 16 MPix sensor (1/2.3 '' format), same optics 24-3000 mm (4.3-539 mm native) opening between f/2.8 and f/8.0, same capacities video capacities (4k30p), same LCD screen, same viewfinder 2,36 Mpix, etc.

According to the information communicated by Nikon, the brand's engineers, however, introduced two small improvements. The first is a selectable AF zone in “Observation Birds” mode which allows you to hang (by hand) the eye of the volatile to guarantee its sharpness.

The second is a low light recording mode which facilitates the success of long exhibitions by preventing the risks of overexposition – a basic version of the live composite of OM System a priori.

Is it satisfactory? Very clearly not. Seven years after the first P1000, Nikon could have kept optics and design while changing the sensor/image processor torque in order to improve image quality. Which suffers, fairly quickly, from the diffraction of optics and a dated image processing (see the official image gallery provided by Nikon above).
But is this launch good news? Yes, because also old the technological offer is, it does not prevent the Coolpix P1100 from providing a real service to long-distance photo enthusiasts, in particular ornithology enthusiasts.
The Coolpix P1100 will be available from February 27 at € 1199.
