After a light year 2024 on the cinema side, the MCU returned in force in 2025 with no less than three new films expected in theaters. Between Captain America: Brave New World (release on February 12) and The fantastic 4: first steps (released on July 23), Marvel offers us the mysterious Thunderbolts * and its band of anti-heroes.

The story of the film

This 36th film in the Marvel cinematographic universe is the last part of phase 5 of the MCU, started with Ant-man and the wasp: Quantumania In 2023. He tells us the story of a group of antiheros and super-criminals seen in previous films and Marvel series.

It is made up of Yelena Belova (seen in Black Widow,, Hawkeye), Bucky Barnes (Captain America), Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian (Black Widow), John Walker (Falcon and the winter soldier), Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster (Black Widow) and Ava Starr / Ghost (Ant-man and the wasp).

The latter are captured by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, director of the CIA, and forced to accept a dangerous mission while the Avengers no longer exist. The opportunity for them to obtain a redemption for their past crimes, if they manage to survive the terrifying threat to them: the overpowered Sentry.

Thunderbolts * is based on the eponymous Marvel team, which appeared for the first time in the comics in 1997. Over the years, this team responsible for protecting the earth during the absence of the Avengers has experienced many names and members.

In reference to these different names, the title of the film was adorned with an asterisk. Producer Kevin Feige confirmed that the meaning of this asterical will be explained at the exit of the film.

Who is at the Thunderbolts *?

The idea of a film based on the team of Thunderbolts came from director James Gunn (The guards of the galaxy,, Superman) As of 2017, but was only formalized in July 2022. Directed by Jake Schreier (the series Fierce), the film is written by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok,, Carter agent) On a story by Lee Sung Jin (Fierce) and Joanna Calo (The Bear).

The production team remains classic for a Marvel: we thus find the unbeatable Kevin Feige, accompanied by Brian Chapek (Black Widow), Louis d'Esposito (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Jason Tames (Echo). Note the presence of actress Scarlett Johansson as a producer.

The music lovers will appreciate that the music is signed by the pop group Son Lux, when the photograph of the film is the work of the talented Andrew Droz Palermo (The Green Knight,, A GHOST Story).

What release date for Thunderbolts *?

While the shooting of Thunderbolts * was planned to start in June 2023, he was postponed due to the strikes of actors and writers in Hollywood. Marvel managed to advance the rest of the production as much as possible, and the main shooting finally took place in Atlanta and in Utah from February to June 2024.

Due to the delays due to strikes, the film's release date has been postponed in the summer of 2025 for a time. But it was ultimately fixed definitively on May 2 in the United States. In France, the film Thunderbolts * released on April 30, 2025.

Who is in the casting of the film?
