Garmin Descent G2: To be more than a diving computer, the watch reveals a redesigned screen and design
Two years after a G1 descent intended to serve as a wrist diving computer, and even offered as an option with a solar load panel, Garmin renews its connected watch. The device is logically baptized DESCENT G2 and still targets lovers of the underwater world, but not only. Its device is certainly always equipped to resist depths, but adapts to more daily uses thanks to the integration of a GPS and the monitoring of health, such as heart rate and sleep quality.
This update of a niche watch also concerns its design, which is gaining modernity. More elegant, the Descent G2 wants to be ecoconized from recycled ocean plastics. Above all, we note that the display adopts – like all Garmin's recent watches, including Fenix 8 – AMOLED technology.
Its 1.2 inch screen wins in definition with 390 x 390 pixels (176 x 176 pixels for the G1). In short, the readability is much better, which invites to use the watch underwater and on earth. For a tocante compatible with the Garmin Pay wrist payment system, we nevertheless expected. On the other hand, the adoption of the Amoled results in a drop in autonomy. Thus, when the G1 promised three weeks of use in connected watch mode, the G2 announces 10 days.
Garmin embellishes his Descent G2 with multiple options dedicated to diving. It supports varied modes (monogaz, multigaz, with closed circuit recycler) or plays only the deep meters if necessary, includes an electronic compass with three axes to better orient yourself below the surface, or even a display mode enlarged to facilitate the reading underwater of essential data. Apnea is not forgotten, in the pool or at sea, with a variidei, a speed graph and customizable alerts. It should be noted that after diving, the watch provides a visualization of outings on cards using the surface GPS.
Aimed certainly for divers, but with more complete sports tools (monitoring of the variability of heart rate, compatibility with sports such as cycling or bodybuilding, VO2 max, etc.) and compatible with daily notifications from smartphones iOS or Android, the Descent G2 is billed € 699. It is already available on the brand's website.
