Optical fiber: SFR definitively buries its coaxial network, are you concerned?

There will soon no longer be any trace of the inheritance of Numericable, which bought SFR in 2014 before taking its name. The ISP is indeed inviting its final subscribers passing through the wired network FTTB (Fiber to the Building), otherwise called a coaxial fiber, to go to pure fiber, or FTTH (Fiber to the Home).

Coaxial fiber, a relic of the past

Deemed more efficient and reliable, the FTTH is today the fiber optic standard for all ISPs. However, SFR (or rather numbable) proposed in the past the Hybrid FTTB (or FTTLA) technology. The latter, instead of directly bringing the fiber of a housing connection knot as the FTTH does, stops at the foot of the building. Then, a coaxial cable with limited performance transports the data to the accommodation.

This abandonment of the FTTB network is part of SFR's desire for several years to modernize its network by embracing a more modern technology.

A compulsory transition in a few months

It is via an email to its customers that SFR announced the news at the end of the coaxial fiber. As of December 31, 2025, the operation of this network will be stopped, also cutting the linked subscriptions. The FAI therefore invites subscribers to take the lead, by switching to the real optical fiber and by indicating them whether or not they are eligible.

SFR rather vaguely specifies that it will be possible to “Continue to take full advantage of the services to which you have subscribed“. Subscribers wonder if this also concerns options such as Bridge mode or IPV4 Full Stack. Likewise, if the installation should be free, the question of the price of the new offer compared to the old one remains complete .
