Stellantis asks drivers of 236,900 Citroën to no longer drive following the danger of Takata Airbags
This is a crisis as part of the Takata defective airbags scandalJapanese company which put the key under the door in 2018. The problem comes from the ammonium nitrate used in the deployment of airbags which degrades over time. In the event of an accident, metallic fragments are sometimes projected in the passenger compartment: a deadly risk.
Large reminder campaign for Citroën
The assessment is already heavy in France with a death in mainland France and eleven overseas since the tropical climate accelerates the degradation of the ammonium nitrate. Among the other affected manufacturers who recalled millions of vehicles with these defective airbags: Volkswagen, BMW, Nissan and Toyota.
Stellantis therefore mobilizes considerable means to manage the crisis. Eight French factories (Rennes, Poissy, Sochaux, Mulhouse, Trémery, Charleville-Mézières, Hordain and Douvrin) were requisitioned to accommodate customers.
Dealers also have sufficient airbag stocks to make immediate replacements without waiting for several weeks, loan vehicles are also available
.
However, it will be necessary to strengthen communication: out of 73,800 people contacted in January 2025 in the north of France, only 42,400 made an appointment for a repair but only 17,600 vehicles were revised.
And that's not all since C3 owners file a complaint against Stellantis to “endangering the life of others” And “misleading commercial practices” and request financial compensation.
The next recall phase is already ready and concerns 869,000 vehicles sold between 2014 and 2019 in the north of France but also in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Immobilization will not be requested but reinforced monitoring will be implemented.
The Ministry of Transport supports the Stellantis campaign with reinforced communication in the overseas service stations. Technical control centers are also mobilized to alert owners of vehicles concerned during checks.
