Subscribers taken by surprise

Early 2025, Canal+ announced a major change in its offers: the subscribers without commitment would no longer have access to 4K, HDR and Dolby Atmos. At the time, this decision seemed only to apply to new subscribers. But many recent testimonies show that those who have subscribed before 2025 are also affected.

On social networks and, in particular, on the forums of the Canal group, The discontent rises. For the most part, it is the disappointment to learn the news by surprise: customers who have subscribed via operators like Free report have lost access to ultra HD channels without notice. For others, this change seems to be a disguised way of encouraging to move to an offer with commitment.

A commercial strategy or a technical constraint?

Does Canal+ seek to push its subscribers to more profitable formulas? It is a possibility. Commitment offers guarantee stable income, while flexible subscriptions, often subscribed via intermediaries, are less advantageous for the group. By deleting the UHD on these formulas, Canal+ encourages its subscribers to subscribe directly to his home.

The technical argument is not to exclude either. Ultra HD consumes more bandwidth and represents a significant cost in infrastructure. Canal+ could therefore also seek to reduce these expenses by limiting access to 4K.

Recall that Canal+ A, last week, already deleted two services from its subscriptions (without price change).
