History / context
In a distant future, the galaxy is governed by a central body of humans and artificial intelligences called the nucleus (contraction of “consciousness restitory”). The technological and economic triumphs of the nucleus allowed humanity to colonize most of the Milky Way and enjoy peace and prosperity. However, the balance is broken by a technological advance which makes it possible to reliably transfer the awareness of a human being to a machine, which theoretically gives it an infinite life, in a process called “patterning”. Following a mandate imposed on humanity by the nucleus requiring that everyone submits to a modeling as a public health measure, a rebellious group is formed from colonies of the galaxy (hence their name, the Arms), whose members refuse to leave their natural bodies to reach the machines of the nucleus.
