Plex greatly increases its prices and bridle its free operation

For several years now, Plex, the multimedia management service allowing you to enjoy its own content as with any streaming service, has struggled to find the right balance to stay afloat. On this March 19, 2025, the company behind this customer-server system acted a decision that it had not made for more than ten years: to increase its prices.

A strong increase for the Pilex Pass

Free for the majority of its features, Plex offers a plex pass, an optional subscription adding or improving tools. From April 29, the latter's prices will climb strongly, as follows:

• Monthly subscription, from € 4.99 to € 6.99
• Annual subscription, from € 39.99 to € 69.99
• Lifetime subscription, from € 119.99 to € 249.99

The most interested will therefore likely want to afford the life subscription at a preferential price as long as this is still possible.

To justify this increase, Plex declares: “This price increase will guarantee that we will be able to continue investing resources dedicated in the development of new features, while taking charge and developing your favorites.“This year, Plex also plans to integrate the recommendation service for parents Common Sense Media and offer a new server management application on the web and mobile.

Remote reading is no longer free

Another bad news awaits plex users in its free version. Reading remotely, therefore making it possible to consult content (series, film, music …) from a plex server without being on the same local network as the latter, will not be free soon. This change will take place “at the future of our new plex experience for mobile platforms and other“.

Plex Media Server is software that acts as a server customer. It allows users to access films, series, music and photos from any place from an internet connection. It has a Netflix interface.

To be able to continue to take advantage of it, two solutions. The first pass unsurprisingly through the Pas Pass: a subscriber can stream the content of his server to people of his choice outside of his local network. They can then have access to it without paying, as is the case today. On the other hand, if the holder of a server does not have a Pass Piles, to be able to access it remotely, it will soon be necessary to afford a plex pass, or else go through a new less expensive option, the Remote Watch Pass at € 1.99 per month or € 19.99 per year.

Finally, note that the limitation obliging to make a single payment to remove the reading limit of one minute on Android and iOS applications will soon be deleted. Reading content on a local network from new Plex mobile applications will be free.

Plex is a media center based on a server that allows you to organize and read multimedia files on all types of devices. He also offers a free video streaming offer to watch movies and series.
