Data leak at Free: IBANs are indeed affected
If the Free personal data leak was a series, here comes a new sad episode. Previously : Friday October 25, following the publication of a hacker on a forum looking for a buyer for a massive leak of information concerning Free customersthe firm sent an email to its subscribers to confirm the veracity of the facts. This email clearly mentioned the leak of classic data (name, first name, online and physical contact details, subscriber identifier and contractual data) for 19 million customers, but not the case of IBANs, although mentioned by the hacker.
A hacker who wants to “make a mess”
The latter therefore decided to speak again. To prove that he had indeed recovered IBANs from Free customers, namely 5 million, mostly French, he decided to leak 100,000 of them onto the dark web.
He adds: “A copy of the data is about to be sold for more than $70,000. If the company does not participate in this one auction in the coming days, this copy will be sold, leading to serious consequences for customers, and will likely be publicly disclosed on forums in the near future.“
Free reacts to the IBAN leak
Contacted by Next.ink, Free confirmed that “the IBANs of certain subscribers were affected and they were informed by email“. This morning, the media actually received an email concerning one of its lines. We can actually read, this time, that its IBAN in addition to its personal data are affected by the leak. Passwords and Fortunately, bank card data is still not in danger.
The fact remains that if you are affected by this leak, and even more so of your IBAN, caution is especially required, whether Free buys this database or not.
