AI at the service of radars from 2025 on our roads to detect 3 offenses

While the question of the budget is still far from being resolved in the National Assembly, the mediaArgus spotted two interesting lines in the 2025 Road Safety program, among the budgetary annexes of the Ministry of the Economy. These state: “depending on technological capabilities and the necessary approval, new offenses may be deployed on several hundred pieces of equipment (inter-distance, non-compliance with wearing a seat belt, hand-held telephone).

Fusion (2) of technologies for road safety

In addition to investing 46.3 million euros in new radarsRoad Safety therefore wishes to improve the current capabilities of many radars. The Fusion 2 model, available in around 1,500 units in the country, should be the first affected. These radars and future models could therefore go further than simple speed control, by adding to this capacity that of controlling the safety distance between two vehicles, whether or not to wear a seat belt, and whether the driver phone while driving.

To achieve this result, artificial intelligence (which are, after all, just algorithms) and advanced high-tech systems will be necessary. Doppler antennas will make it possible to track up to 126 vehicles at the same time over 100 meters and five lanes to control safety distances. Radar models already capable of this exist, but a complete metrological procedure is necessary, as well as providing proof of the offense to be able to issue a fine.

Still a long way to go

For the belt and the telephone, approval should be a little easier to obtain, especially since human validation will be necessary before a possible fine. However, as the lines shown above in this article indicate, this evolution of radars has not yet been made. To obtain approval, false positives will need to remain below 5%. The ability of AI to learn from its mistakes will therefore be central.

Once everything is in place, urban areas will be served as a priority. Two radar models, the number of which should increase in the next 15 months, should receive the capacity to control belt and telephone: the Mesta Compact from Idemia (southern France) and the Parifex Nomad (northern France).
