France Identity: early renewal of the identity card from the beginning of 2025, but not for everyone

France Identity is an interesting step forward for French people. Thanks to the latter, it is possible to prove your identity, store your driving license, access more than 1,400 online services or even carry out a voting proxy. The application is unfortunately only reserved for owners of the new biometric national identity card (CNI) launched in 2021, thus excluding a good number of citizens.

However, things are about to improve, with the addition of an option to renew your national identity card early. Already mentioned a few months agothe latter should finally be available “from the beginning of next year” according to a recent statement by the director of France Titles, Anne-Gaëlle Baudouin, on France Culture. We will more precisely be entitled to the new reason “I want a digital identity” to renew your national identity card.

This therefore offers a much more generalized and desirable renewal solution than cases of theft, loss or deterioration of one's current identity card. She is also more than grateful for those who still have several years to wait for their CNI to reach its expiry date.

An important point should nevertheless be underlined: only holders of a card issued between 2016 and 2021 will be affected by the new reason for early renewal. A restriction explained purely and simply as follows by Anne-Gaëlle Baudouin: “For what ? Because over this period, we have identity data in our files, explained Anne-Gaëlle Baudouin. This allows you to automatically create [les nouvelles cartes]and therefore reducing the workload of town halls and prefectures”.

For information, the director of France Titles added that SNCF operators will soon be able to use NFC technology to verify the identity of travelers (compared to a simple visual check via France Identity previously). The support by the end of the year, or even the beginning of 2025, of the registration document in the application was also mentioned.
