Xiaomi SU7 Ultra

With a prototype of its SU7 Ultra electric sedan, Xiaomi breaks the record for electric sedans on the Nürburgring.

We no longer count the electric cars that exceed the symbolic bar of 1000 hp, of Tesla Model S Throw Blanket to the Lucid Air Sapphire through the Lynk&Co Zero and Porsche Taycan GT. Completely useless, these cars are still very important image vectors for manufacturers.

It's Xiaomi's turn to shake up the hierarchy, with the SU7 Ultra, available for pre-order for a few days, with 1,547 hp. However, the Chinese manufacturer wanted to demonstrate that it was not content to provide excessive power, but that it was usable. To do this, nothing better than a short ride on the demanding northern loop of the famous Nürburgring, in Germany.

A record, quite simply

Recently, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT (1,034 hp) claimed the title of fastest electric on the track in 7:07.55, at the expense of the Tesla Model S Plaid (1,020 hp) which found itself 18 seconds behind .

This title now goes to the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra which, driven by British driver David Pittard, completed a lap in just 6:46.874. Please note, however, that this is a prototype and not a production version.

However, this time was only achieved in a single attempt and, as we can see at 4:15 minutes of the video below, the pilot suffered a loss of power of around ten seconds. If that hadn't happened, it would have been even faster.

During a presentation intended to confirm the feat on the Nürburgring, Xiaomi lifted the veil on the production model. It is therefore not the latter which faced the Green Hell, although it promises performance very close to the prototype, without being as extreme. Here, we don't know which tires were used, nor anything about the chassis settings.

Like the prototype, the SU7 Ultra is equipped with three electric motors delivering 1,547 hp, or around 50% more power compared to the Model S Plaid and Taycan Turbo GT. Xiaomi claims that it can reach 100 km/h in just 1.98 seconds and 200 km/h in 5.86 seconds before reaching 350 km/h in top speed.

These motors are powered by a CATL Qilin 2.0 battery which allows a range of 630 km on the very generous CLTC cycle (count 20% less on the WLTP cycle).

A very special model

In order to make the car so efficient, the high-tech giant equips its sedan with huge 430 mm carbon-ceramic brake discs, gripped by six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear. back.

The improvements don't stop there. Xiaomi has fitted dual-chamber air suspension and shock absorbers, or if customers prefer, the SU7 Ultra can be fitted with Bilstein Evo T1 coilovers offering 10 levels of adjustment. Finally, torque vectoring can adjust the motors' power up to 500 times per second.

Visually, the stock SU7 Ultra isn't as extreme as the prototype. It does not have the racing rear wing and has a smaller spoiler. The front is also more sober, but stands out from lower versions with a new splitter, enlarged air intakes and an active rear diffuser.
