Three years ago, in 2021, LG said goodbye to the phone market. But a return is possible according to a patent filed in June 2024 with the USPTO then validated in October. The 14-page document describes a new display innovation as the Korean company presented a malleable and stretchable slab.

LG patent shows advanced technology

The 14-page document describes a high-rigidity support structure with opening patterns in the foldable area and various adhesive layers at multiple levels of curing to improve foldability and reduce display defects. The device aims to solve certain problems in the field of foldable screens, in particular those of the range Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

In its patent, LG specifies, to justify the interest of a robust folding solution, that “Users who watch or play games on a portable device prefer a large screen. However, enlarging the screen hampers portability”.

The patent application comes after LG presented a malleable screen. But another patent was also revealedshowing a smartphone with a rollable panel that was abandoned when the mobile division closed. The timing is also interesting when we know that Samsung has also filed a document which shows a model capable of folding in three.

Remember that if LG withdrew from the telephone market in 2021, it was to refocus its activities on other sectors: components for electric vehicles, IoT, connected homes, robotics and artificial intelligence. The Korean company's patent would be a first sign of a reassessment of its strategy for a comeback with a smartphone with flexible screens.
