Relatively short range and not the best against modern countermeasures, but does the job for the price

The AIM-9 Sidewinder is a supersonic, infrared-guided air-to-air missile. It is equipped with a high-power explosive warhead and an infrared thermal guidance system. Developed by the US Navy for fleet air defense, it was adapted by the US Air Force to equip combat aircraft. Early versions of this missile were widely used during the conflict in Southeast Asia.

The AIM-9L introduced a more capable solid propellant rocket engine as well as increased tracking and maneuvering capability. An improved active optical fuze enhanced the missile's lethality and resistance to electronic countermeasures. A conical scanning sensor increased the sensitivity of the search system and improved tracking stability. The L model was the first Sidewinder capable of engaging targets from all angles, including head-on. Production and delivery of the AIM-9L began in 1976.
