After three weeks at the top of the American box office, Venom: The Last Dance gave up its first place to the detriment of what was to be one of the Christmas blockbusters: Red One. The action comedy starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Evans certainly starts well ahead, but nevertheless falls well short of expectations.

Red Onea new failure of 2024?

Released on 4032 screens in America, Red One thus raked in 34 million dollars for its first weekend. A launch that wouldn't be so bad if the film hadn't cost Amazon MGM the tidy sum of $250 million, plus around $100 million in marketing. The film limits (a little) the breakage internationally, and totals 84 million worldwide.

All these figures put into perspective, it will however be complicated for Red One to get into financial trouble, like other failures in theaters like Joker: Folie à Deux (starting at 37 million for a budget of 200) or Killers of the Flower Moon (launch at 27 million for a budget of 200). Just like Apple, Amazon probably also wants to make the film a flagship product for its Prime Video streaming platformbut this timid start remains very disappointing.

Venom 3 remains in second place at the American box office, with $7.3 million added to its bag in its 4th week. Marvel's symbiote is holding up surprisingly well – especially due to a lack of direct competition – and today peaks at $436 million worldwide.

This third opus is no longer very far from the score of its predecessor, Venom: Let There Be Carnagewho ended his career at 506 million worldwide.

In the rest of the box office, the horror film Heretic with Hugh Grant still collects $5.1 million for its second weekend. At this rate, the feature film produced by A24 (Midsommar, Hereditary, Civil War, Everything Everywhere All at Once) is expected to end its run between the scores of other films from the studio such as Priscilla (30.9 million) and The Witch (40.3 million). Not bad for a film with a modest budget of 10 million.

Finally, as announced in our columns, The Wild Robot continues nicely on its merry way and has just exceeded the symbolic mark of 300 million dollars generated worldwide. This is thanks to excellent word of mouth and a glaring lack of competition in the family niche. The Dreamworks animated film has the way until November 27 and the tidal wave Moana 2.
