WhatsApp can now transcribe voice messages to text (but there's a catch)

Voice messages have exploded in popularity in recent years, particularly for their practical aspect: if you have a long message to formulate, giving it vocally saves time, while offering a more pleasant understanding of the message (the intention and tone can sometimes get lost in the text). However, for the person receiving the voice message, audio playback can be a little more complicated: if you are in public for example, it can be more complicated to listen to a message than to read it.

French Android users harmed

It is for this reason that various messaging services have been offering for several months the possibility of directly transcribe voice messages into written formin order to offer the user who received the voice message the possibility of reading it quickly without having to listen to it. Until now, WhatsApp was not affected by such a feature, but now the application is getting in tune: on its official blog, WhatsApp announced the launch of the function. To take advantage of this, go to WhatsApp Settings, then select the Discussions menu, and finally the Transcribe voice messages option. Here you will be able to activate or deactivate the function, but that's not all.

This is also where you can choose the language in which to transcribe the voice message into text. Note that at the moment, the function is only accessible in English, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese on Android. In other words, you will have to wait a little to be able to speak French. On iOS, however, more languages ​​are accessible, including French, German, Japanese and even Korean). So, on an iPhone, you can already make written transcriptions of voice messages: to do this, long press on a voice message, so that a “Transcribe” option appears on the screen. Tap it, and let the app do its job!
