Please note, these lenses are capable of covering the APS-C sensor format, and not 24x36mm! They are therefore predestined for Canon's EOS R APS-C hybrid bodies like theEOS R7 or theEOS R10. It is physically possible to mount it and use it on a Canon Full Frame hybrid, but this will be at the cost of a “crop”, or reframing in the camera's sensor, and therefore a drop in definition. pictures.

At Canon, the conversion coefficient between APS-C and 24×36 mm is x1.6. The 16 mm is therefore equivalent to a 25.6 mm (an interesting focal length for landscape), the 23 mm is equivalent to a 36.7 mm (an interesting focal length for reporting and street photography), the 30 mm is therefore equivalent to a 48 mm (the standard focal length par excellence) and the 56 mm is equivalent to 89.6 mm (an interesting focal length for portraiture). All these lenses are ultra-bright and offer a maximum aperture of f/1.4 combined with a circular diaphragm with 9 blades which allows you to obtain very marked depth of field effects and beautiful bokeh: an undeniable advantage.

Regarding autofocus, a control algorithm including optimization of AF and communication speed has been developed specifically for these lenses. In addition to ensuring high-speed autofocus, they also support Servo-AF continuous focus and camera aberration correction.

Availability and prices

These new lenses will be available in two distinct waves. The first from December 5 for the 30mm F1.4 DC DN and 56mm F1.4 DC DN offered at prices of €369 and €469 respectively. The second in January 2025 for the 16mm F1.4 DC DN and 23mm F1.4 DC DN offered at prices of €439 and €549 respectively.

First opinion

It's very good news for Canon APS-C hybrid users to see these four fixed focal lengths arriving. Indeed, Canon's RF-S APS-C range is still relatively underdeveloped and does not yet offer beautiful ultra-bright f/1.4 fixed focal lengths. Users of Canon 24×36 mm hybrids, however, will still be left wanting more, as Canon has not yet opened its mount to lenses of this type. It's a question of time, you have to wait and wait. Finally, note that Sigma is not the only manufacturer to offer lenses in compatible Canon RF mounts, Tamron is also soon preparing its wide-angle zoom 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD.
