In the collective imagination, the desktop computer is perceived as a cumbersome, slow machine with outdated ergonomics. This view is not completely unfounded, because although the technology has evolved, such models still persist in the market. Fortunately, there are excellent alternatives today, and MSI undoubtedly offers one of the most convincing with its Cubi NUC 1M.
Setting up a minimalist office
MSI took care to respond, point by point, to the criticisms leveled against traditional desktop PCs, starting with the problem of bulk.
The Cubi NUC 1M features an ultra-compact design of 13.5 cm x 13.2 cm, with a thickness of no more than 5 cm. This format allows it to fit naturally on a desk. Better yet, it can be attached to the back of a monitor using a VESA mount, freeing up space while providing a sleek look.
On this subject, it is difficult not to recommend an association with the MSI MP341 CQ professional screen, and its impressive 34-inch curved panel in 21:9 format. Together, they form a perfect duo thanks to the additional VESA hook on the screen, especially since the Power Link function allows you to use the power button on the screen to turn the computer on or off. The experience is then comparable to that of an all-in-one computer. For those who prefer more traditional use, the Cubi also comes with an independent ignition button, allowing start-up without using the Power Link function.
More compact and more powerful!
But the Cubi NUC 1M is not a simple envelope with elegant lines. Above all, it is a high-performance and reliable computer, designed to accomplish demanding tasks without running out of steam. At its heart is a new Intel Raptor Lake processor, up to the Core i7-150U. Equipped with 10 cores and 12 threads, this chip benefits from Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology which allows it to reach an impressive frequency of 5.40 GHz.
But that's not its only argument, it is capable of accommodating up to 64 GB of DDR5 RAM clocked at 5,200 MHz. Suffice to say that he fears neither multitasking nor the most demanding applications. Especially since the use of Dual Channel memory increases its efficiency, the two modules can operate simultaneously, which is not the case with a single-channel architecture.
Add to all this a PCIe Gen 4 SSD of up to 1TB, as well as an M.2 SSD 2242 slot to easily expand storage space as needed, and you have a machine that is both versatile and scalable. If that's not enough, it's also possible to attach a 2.5-inch HDD or SSD externally.
Up to four external displays
A computer suitable for professionals must provide complete connectivity without depending on a multitude of dongles to fill in the gaps. Aware of this, MSI equipped the Cubi NUC 1M two USB 3.2 Type-A ports easily accessible on the front, a micro-SD card reader and a 3.5 mm jack combo for headphones and microphone. In addition to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, MSI has also provided two 2.5G RJ45 LAN connectors on the rear.
But the strength of this machine is that it has Thunderbolt 4 ports, one of which supports a power supply of up to 100 watts, which means being able to manage a monitor and its power supply from a single cable. Finally, two HDMI ports complete the package to connect up to four external displays in total.
