Galaxy S25: the new Qi2 standard could be integrated into Samsung's premium smartphones
Qi2, unveiled two years ago, is an improved version of the Qi wireless charging standard. It introduces a magnetic alignment system to ensure more stable and efficient charging, while opening the door to a new ecosystem of accessories. To date, adoption of the Qi2 standard remains limited in the Android mobile world, but the Galaxy S25 series could be a game-changer.
According to leaker Ice Universe, the Galaxy S25, S25+ and S25 Ultra models should adopt the Qi2 standard, becoming the first Samsung smartphones to use this technology. These models would also support Wireless PowerShare, allowing other devices to be charged wirelessly.
Towards accessories inspired by MagSafe?
If Samsung fully exploits the magnetic alignment of the Qi2 standard, this will open the way to numerous accessories, inspired by what Apple offers with its MagSafe technology:
- Magnetic cases and covers for better ergonomics.
- Supports and handles for easy handling.
- Magnetic wallets to keep your cards close at hand.
However, with magnetic alignment being an optional feature, it remains to be seen whether Samsung will choose to fully integrate it. Without this support, the use of magnetic accessories could be compromised.
So-called fast charging
According to various rumors, Samsung is not expected to increase the charging speed of its high-end terminals. Wireless charging would indeed remain limited to 15 W, and smartphones would retain the characteristics of their predecessors:
- Galaxy S25: 4,000 mAh battery and 25W fast charging
- Galaxy S25+: 4,900 mAh battery and 45W fast charging via USB PD PPS
- Galaxy S25 Ultra: 5,000 mAh battery, also compatible with 45W fast charging
Note that Samsung will not include a charging block with its smartphones, as it has done for several generations of Galaxy, in order to comply with environmental measures imposed by the European Commission.
A timid adoption in the Android universe
By integrating the Qi2 standard, Samsung could encourage other Android manufacturers to follow suit, standardizing this technology across the Android ecosystem. So far only the recent HMD Skyline has used Qi2, and brands like Google or OnePlus have not yet taken the plunge.
All that remains is to wait until the Unpacked event expected in January to find out if the possible integration of this new standard can make it popular among other manufacturers
