Albania bans TikTok, a first in Europe

Controversies continue on a global scale as Australia bans social networks for adolescents, including TikTok. Following border clashes with China, India has even banned the social network since 2020. Albania is also taking a similar decision for a period of one year: a first in Europe.

Prime Minister Edi Rama does not mince his words against the social network. During a meeting in Tirana, the country's capital, TikTok was described as “neighborhood thug”even adding that the government will “hunt” the platform “for a year”.

This is a drastic measure which comes less than a month after a tragedy which shook the country. The death of a 14-year-old student and the injury of another during a brawl near a school in Tirana which took root on social networks. The incident sparked a national debate between parents, psychologists and schools on the influence of these platforms on young people.

Albania criticizes TikTok's double standards

Edi Rama criticizes in particular the double standards of the application: “In China, TikTok presents how students take classes, learn how to protect nature, how to preserve traditions, but outside this country we only see dirt and mud. Why do we need this? “

In addition to this ban, which is currently temporary, the Albanian government wishes to launch educational programs for students and wishes to help parents in the academic monitoring of their children.
