Hard blow for Samsung, folding smartphones are not as attractive as expected. ETNews reports that the company did not succeed in achieving its objectives with Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, forcing it to revise its forecasts for 2025.

In details, the South Korean media shared this December 22 that production of the next generation had been reduced to 5 million units, including 3 million for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and 2 million for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. We would therefore be a long way from the 8.2 million models produced for the current generation.

This situation would be caused by a decline in sales for this product category at Samsung, having failed to achieve the 10% growth objective compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. It is also specified that the level of pre-orders and sales was below the previous generation for Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6.

A situation which can be explained by the lack of innovation in recent years, but also increasingly fierce competition. We can particularly think of the very successful OnePlus Open, Honor Magic V3 And Google Pixel 9 Pro Foldmarketed internationally this year.

Veteran display industry analyst Ross Young revealed on Twitter/X on December 23 that Chinese manufacturers are also considering a drop in sales in 2025. The category of folding smartphones would therefore have difficulty finding a place in the hearts of consumers, remaining on more traditional formats.

The high-end market would still be buoyant. According to information from ETNews, Samsung is considering increasing production of its next Galaxy S. The number of units planned for the Galaxy S25 would climb to 37.4 million, which represents an increase of around 7% compared to the Galaxy S24. Note, 3 million Galaxy S25 Slims are planned, which would explain part of this increase in production.
