Galaxy S25: Samsung could simplify software updates for its smartphones
Since 2016, Google has introduced transparent updates, or seamless updatesallowing users to continue using their smartphone while an update is installed. While many brands quickly adopted this feature, Samsung was reluctant until the discreet introduction of this technology on its Galaxy A55 in 2024.
According to Android AuthoritySamsung, which has aligned itself with Google and its software tracking spread over seven years, should finally integrate this function into its next Galaxy S25 series, the release of which is imminent.
The system is based on an architecture in two system partitions, A and B:
- Background installation: While the user is using partition A, the update is downloaded and installed on partition B.
- Quick restart: Once the installation is complete, the phone reboots to the now updated partition B.
This process minimizes interruptions, making the device unavailable for only a few seconds, unlike traditional updates where the device remains unusable for much longer. Setting up A/B partitions, however, requires sufficient internal storage, a challenge met with the Galaxy A55 which undoubtedly served as a guinea pig for the South Korean giant.
What are the benefits for users?
In addition to reduced download times, this process also improves security. If there is a failure to install the update, the system can reboot to the non-updated partition, avoiding any risk of software corruption or loss of critical data.
Finally, thanks to this system, users can answer calls, send messages or perform other essential tasks even during the update. This continuity is particularly valuable in emergency situations.
A highly anticipated Galaxy Unpacked
If Samsung has still not confirmed the date of its Unpacked, South Korean media expect it to officially unveil its Galaxy S25 series on January 22, 2025, with the first models available from February 7. The manufacturer could also take advantage of the event to make other announcements, such as a new generation of its Galaxy Ring, an ultra-thin version of the Galaxy S25, or even a potential competitor to the Apple Vision Pro.
