Good news for bikers and scooter riders. Since January 11, 2025, inter-lane traffic is now authorized on certain French roads. This practice, practiced “always” by drivers of two and three-wheelers, is finally included in the highway code after several years of testing.

What is interfile traffic?

When traffic becomes heavy, as often on the Paris ring road, you often see two wheels passing between the cars. This is called interline traffic. This should only apply when traffic is slowed or blocked. The objective is to make journeys more fluid while avoiding increasing traffic jams.. However, this type of driving remains prohibited on certain secondary roads and under specific conditions.

The authorization comes with strict rules. Only roads with several lanes in the same direction are concerned and where the maximum authorized speed is between 70 and 130 km/h. Note that interlining is also authorized on roads where the speed has been lowered by local authorities, such as on the Paris ring road where its practice is part of everyday life.

The maximum speed of motorcycles and scooters in interfile is set at 50 km/h. Failure to comply with these rules may result in a fine. The government specifies that this legislation only applies in specific areas. Failure to comply with these rules exposes you to withdrawal of 3 points on your driving license and a fixed fine of €135.

A conclusive test before formalization

Between 2016 and 2021, tests were carried out in several regions, including Île-de-France. These experiments made it possible to analyze behavior and assess risks. The conclusions showed that, properly supervised, this practice improves circulation and reduces user stress.

Motorcycle associations are delighted with this recognition. By securing this practice, France joins other European countries such as Belgium and Italy. This decision marks a move towards mobility more adapted to the needs of two-wheel drivers.
