Since the takeover of X by Elon Musk, criticism has intensified over the ideological orientation of the platform and the proliferation of toxic content. For its detractors, X is no longer a neutral space, but a tool of political manipulation and division. It is in this context that a French collective developed HelloQuitXa solution to leave this network without losing your audience.
According to the creators, X has become incompatible with healthy public debate. Public figures, communities (including Paris town hall), as well as institutions and associations such as the Human Rights League, have already left the network. The high point of this initiative is set for January 20, the symbolic day of the inauguration of Donald Trump, for whom Elon Musk's social network has been a formidable propaganda and dissemination tool. fake news.
A migration in a few steps
HelloQuitteX offers a simple and secure gateway to transfer data to alternatives deemed respectful of privacy and democracy, such as Bluesky or Mastodon. The process is structured in four steps:
- Downloading archives from X, including subscribers and history.
- Creation of accounts on new platforms.
- Importing data via HelloQuitteX.
- Deletion of personal data by the application once the transfer is complete.
This initiative responds to the feeling of captivity felt by many users, worried about losing their audience or their contacts by leaving X.
Citizen and scientific mobilization
Born in 2023, the HelloQuitteX project brings together around thirty volunteers: developers, lawyers, researchers and associations. The mathematician David Chavalarias, researcher at CNRS, plays a key role in this initiative.
In just ten days, more than 7,000 users have already adopted the app, with a constant influx of new registrations.
A first step before a more massive leak?
HelloQuitteX is part of a broader context of distrust towards large platforms. Recent changes to Facebook's moderation policies, inspired by Elon Musk, may well spark a similar movement toward other alternatives.
Still according to David Chavalarias, “Facebook could be the next step if its ideologization continues.” The objective remains the same: to allow users to regain control of their digital spaces, far from algorithms promoting division and hateful content.
