Byd: European manufacturers receive unexpected help to avoid fines
Byd has already shared its new strategy for Europe: Missing on hybrid vehicles. The Chinese firm has another method to impose itself since it is in negotiations with several European manufacturers to form a pool and sell them carbon credits.
Byd to the aid of European manufacturers
The method will allow these manufacturers to avoid heavy fines imposed by the European Union for exceeding emission thresholds.
The situation has been critical for European manufacturers since the average authorized CO2 emission threshold was dropped by 15 %, early 2025, reaching 81 g/km per new car sold. And the penalties are substantial: € 95 per gram of excess CO2 and per vehicle. According to ACEA, fines could reach between 10 and 15 billion euros, in all.
The manufacturers therefore make arrangements in the face of these constraints. For example, BMW is on the right track to comply with CAFE standards in France. But Vincent Salimon, manager of the car manufacturer, specifies that the average emission rate will probably be higher in other countries. As for Stellantis, Ford and Toyota, companies prefer to ally with Tesla to benefit from its carbon credits rather than Byd.
Volkswagen and Renault remain which have not yet concluded a partnership. The manufacturers have until December 3 to notify the European Commission for the Training of a Pool with Byd, Tesla or any other company.
