Apple Maps is preparing to copy one of the worst features of Google Maps
If Google Maps remains the undeniable master when we talk about geolocation (It even solves murders …), Apple Maps has followed suit for a few years already, in particular thanks to increasingly numerous features, and above all a mutual rivalry which allows the two services to improve by taking inspiration from the other. The problem of inspiration is that it can also take place on ideas that are a little less interesting for the user experience. The proof with Apple's latest idea for its geolocation service: according to Mark Gurman, the American giant would like to add advertisements to Apple Maps.
Google Maps & Apple Maps: same fight
The famous Bloomberg journalist, still aware of the latest news when it comes to Apple, said in its latest newsletter that Apple plans to add advertisements, or highlight sponsored content on its application geolocation. But then, what does that imply? Concretely, from the user's point of view, this means that certain places would be pushed at the top of the search results in the application. For example, a local McDonald's could appear at the top of research when you are looking for “fries”, simply because it has paid to be at the top of the list. Moreover, it would not be the first time that Apple has been planning to add advertisements to Apple Maps: from 2022, the firm was already looking to add advertisements to its service, according to the same Mark Gurman.
The other problem that such a cause function is that of data protection and confidentiality. These geolocation applications certainly have the main purpose of helping their users to move, but also to find interesting addresses, and not necessarily the wealthiest of them. However with such a function, Apple Maps loses what makes its salt, not to mention that nothing indicates that Apple will not use your navigation data to determine the most relevant advertisements to send you. For the moment, no official information has been put forward by Apple, it will therefore be necessary to learn more about this before determining the veracity of this report (even if the friend Gurman has rarely mistaken to About Apple).
