Airbags to make flights by plane ever more secure? Ia of the idea …

The plane may be the most secure means of transport to travel today, when an accident takes place, there are many victims as it is difficult to protect the passengers during a crash. But perhaps the idea developed by two researchers from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Dubai, baptized Project Rebirth and imagined following the crash of the Air India 171 plane in June 2025, has the solution.

An idea that does not lack air

As illustrated below, the idea is simple. When the system, powered by AI, detects a problem (motor concern, loss of speed or altitude, fire, pilot status) and that a crash below the 3000 feet seems inevitable, a giant airbag is deployed. Starting from the nose of the device, he then covers it to the tail in 2 seconds.

Designed to absorb shocks thanks to multiple layers and therefore mitigate the plane crash, this airbag is also helped by an inverted thrust system to slow down and stabilize the descent. On the passenger side, smart fluids in the walls and seats are also there to solidify during the shock and reduce the chances of injury. Finally, GPS and infrared beacons are there to help help locate the device on the ground.

In five years, we want Rebirth to be tested, approved and used during real flights, making survival in the event of an accident a standard and not a miracle.

The two creators promise that their system can be added to future, but also existing planes. Of course, it is only a concept for the moment. The design and test phase is still far away, while researchers are looking for partners to make their idea materialize.
