Amazon reduces its exposure to the prices imposed by Donald Trump to limit the damage. According to known information, commands of scooters or even air conditioners and other products from Asia were suddenly suspended after the presidential announcement of April 2 about customs duties. In all, 180 countries and territories are targeted including China, Vietnam and Thailand.

The sudden cancellation of these orders, without prior warning, suggests suppliers that this is an immediate reaction to new tariff measures. Amazon did not want to comment on the situation but its annual February report already mentioned this possibility by specifying that “Suppliers based in China provide a significant part of our components and finished products”. However, the magnitude of these cancellations and the precise nature of the affected goods remain unknown.

One of Amazon's suppliers who has been selling beach chairs for more than a decade has received a message that informs him of the cancellation of certain orders by asking him not to ship the products. The message, examined by Bloomberg, never evokes customs duties and just speaks of a “error”.

The supplier claims that orders represent $ 500,000 and have been canceled while the beach chairs have already been manufactured, leaving it to pay the factory and find other buyers. The seller, under cover of anonymity for fear of reprisals, stresses that Amazon never canceled his orders in this way.

Scott Miller, former suppliers of suppliers at Amazon and founder of PDPLUS specializing in e-commerce, confirms that the company has canceled orders of goods made in China and Asia for several customers. Since occurred without notice, these cancellations could force suppliers to renegotiate their conditions with the online sales giant.

“Amazon really has all the cards”says Scott Miller. “The only real remedies available to sellers consist either in selling these stocks in other countries with reduced margins, or trying to work with other retailers.”

The beach chairs supplier and Scott Miller specify that Amazon has canceled “Direct import orders”. This is a process during which the company buys large stocks in the country of manufacture to ship products to its US warehouses. Amazon acts as an official importer for these orders, which means that it pays customs duties when the products reach American ports.

This is a method used for years by Amazon to reduce costs thanks to bulk shipping rates. The cancellation of these orders postpones exposure to customs prices on suppliers if they import their goods in the United States by other means.

The products that Amazon bought directly from suppliers represent approximately 40 % of the items sold on the site. The rest comes from independent merchants who, basically, praise a digital sales space by paying commissions and costs for logistics and advertising.
