Android 16 finally introduces an office mode, with multitasking as on PC

It took almost ten years for Google to make such a structuring decision: Android 16 will natively take on an office mode, thought from the outset to adapt to hybrid uses. Presented during the Google I/O 2025 conference This turn is based on a close collaboration with Samsung, a pioneer actor of the genre with his solution Dex. This time, it is no longer a manufacturer’s initiative, but a common base for all.
Android 16: a real desktop mode integrated into the system
The announcement surprised its timing, but not by its content. In collaboration with Samsung, Google has therefore formalized the arrival of a real office mode in Android 16. Unlike previous proprietary initiatives, it will be natively integrated into the OS, and accessible to all compatible manufacturers. A first.
This mode will offer a redesigned interface: opening of applications in resize windows, bar of tasks at the bottom of the screen, displaced system icons, and disappearance of traditional icons on the home screen. The whole evokes more a conventional operating system than a mobile interface. An assumed choice, which is addressed directly to tablet users looking for productivity.

The first scattered images show a minimalist interface, structured around an empty space and an application dock. The windows adopt conventions conventions (reduce, close, resize), while the home screen loses its icon layout in favor of an operation close to Chrome OS. It is a break, but controlled.

This office mode will be accessible to all manufacturers, where the previous approaches remained confined to certain brands. The decision is strategic. It could relaunch interest in Android tablets often confined to consumer use. With Android 16, The bone gives itself the means to exist in the field of nomadic work.
It will still be necessary that the applications follow, and that the manufacturers play the game. But on paper, the proposal is solid.
