Android 16: Gmail and messages benefit from the brand new design, without system update

The update Android 16 is not yet available, but Google has decided to get a little ahead of the design side. Thanks to a discreet deployment on the server side, Gmail and Google Messages already wear the new Material 3 Expressive style in some. A more daring, more readable design, and especially more in tune with current graphic trends.
Gmail and google messages move up a gear with Material 3 Expressive
Expressive Material 3 interface, unveiled with Android 16therefore begins to settle in Google’s flagship applications.
On Gmail, this evolution immediately jumps into the eyes: the search bar is extended, the account change icon is integrated directly into it, and the editorial button for a new e-mail becomes more visible, with more bright colors. E-mails are presented in cards with more airy design, with softer and elastic scanning animations.

Same logic on the side of Google Messages, where design gives way to a flexible tab interface to access emojis, gifs, stickers and other photomojis. Each section is presented in the form of pastilles, with supported contrasts to better guide the eye. The whole remains fluid, legible, and above all, consistent with the graphic vision of Android 16.

This new style has been seen in particular in the 2025.05.11 Gmail update, and in the 20250528_00_c00_c00 version of Google Messages. Note that these developments are pushed via an update on the server side, which means that you have nothing to do to benefit from it … provided that your account is part of the happy elected officials.
