Faced with the surge of video boxes caused by the demand of content creators, all manufacturers are not equal: Sony has taken a big lead with its ZV range. But the Giant Canon is replicating today with its first hybrid in RF mount, the global design of which is really thought of for video and youtubers: the EOS R50V, the Suffix V now becoming the marker of this range.

We are therefore entitled to an APS-C hybrid capable of natively receiving RF-S optics but also RF optics, accepting an X1.6 cropping coefficient for the latter.

From an electronic point of view, the EOS R50V is simply a EOS R50with the same 24.2 MP Dualpixel CMOS AF II sensor and the same DIGIC X image processor. Photo quality – because yes, it can also take photos! – will therefore be similar. But in addition to the fact that the video part was vitamin, all the ergonomics of the case has been redesigned.

(Small) ergonomics

The EOS R50V box body has nothing to do with it with that of its brother EOS R50. The case is simplified, rectangular and therefore more ready to be integrated into a setup with optics and mat-box and atomos-style view screen. This redesigned ergonomics align with the same choices as Sony, the most notable being the outright disappearance of the 2,36 MP electronic viewfinder of its brother.

Canon added a Rec (video recording, editor's note) button on the front and a second step on the side to be able to arrange it on a tripod both vertically and horizontally. We can clearly feel the weight of social social networks such as Tiktok and Instagram reels that change the ways of filming.

To hold the shock of long recordings (emissions, etc.), Canon has reinforced the magnesium alloy chassis in order to improve thermal dissipation. The Japanese promises up to 2 hours of video in 4K, but without specifying the frame rate (Bitrate) or the Codec.

Video: software and operational improvements

From the point of view of pure video quality, it is a safe bet that there is no major difference between the original EOS R50 and this EOS R50V. In maximum quality, we are always entitled to 4K30P from 6K capture.

Maximum sampling is always in 4: 2: 2 10 bits and the absence of stabilization of the sensor is always (partly) compensated by electronic stabilization (which involves a crop.

The real video evolutions therefore do not come from electronics, which is the same, but from software and ergonomics. The EOS R50V manages the cannon log3 and Lut them to facilitate calibration. But it also incorporates aspect markers, Timecode management (to synchronize several cameras), a lamp marker on the facade (Tally Light), etc. Or a sound control helmet outing, taken absent from the classic R50.

The stream responds present

The EOS R50V is not content to want to seduce YouTubers, but also streamers/streamers. Understanding here, the audiences that favor live performance (Live) on Twitch, YouTube and others. To this end, the EOS R50V is obviously compatible with UVC/UAC protocols to be recognized as a (super) webcam.

In this configuration, it can send a flow to 4k60p via the USB. A priori with cropping since this mode imposes one in the mode shoot Classic. If the user wants to switch to a higher notch, he can also use the HDMI socket to recover the gross signal – but is responsible for having an acquisition card to process the video signal.

A dedicated optics

The EOS R50V is launched with a dedicated optics; RF-S 14-30 mm f/4.0-6.3 IS STM PZ. An electrically designed motorized zoom thought both for its compactness and its ability to make clean zooms/dezooms.

It should be emphasized here that this zoom is more than necessary. Because the big Achille heel of the APS-C de Canon range-RF-S frame-is the few references available. Canon thus offers only five zooms (new 14-30 including) and the only fixed focal lengths available are optics dedicated to VR.

Fortunately, Sigma and Tamron were able to recover a license, since they have recently offered three zooms and four fixed focal lengths for the first, and a large-angle zoom for the second. We are far from the Sony optical park.

Availability and prices

The EOS R50V will be available in the month of April.

It will be launched in two versions:

  • EOS R50V nude case: € 759
  • EOS R50V Box + RF-S 14-30 mm F/4.0-6.3 IS STM PZ: € 999
