Asterix: The Kingdom of Nubia – the next Gaulish film gets a first teaser

While the series Asterix & Obelix: The Battle of the Leaders by Alain Chabat has established itself as one of the most successful programs of the year, and that the new album Asterix in Lusitania was released a few days ago, the famous Gaul has not finished having adventures.

The next of these, Asterix and the Kingdom of Nubiahas just released a first teaser which reveals unknown territory for our die-hard heroes, as well as a slightly revised design.

Asterix returns to Africa

This next animated film will once again transport Asterix and Obelix to the African continent, decades after their escapade in Egypt in Asterix and Cleopatra.

The official synopsis of Kingdom of Nubia thus specifies that Panoramix has, by mistake, mixed an elixir of youth with the magic potion, transforming the inhabitants of the Gaulish village into simple children. To save the situation and protect their village from the Roman threat, Asterix and Obelix then undertake a journey to the distant kingdom of Nubia in order to find a cure.

Nubia is a region stretching from southern Egypt to northern Sudan, and which was the site of one of the first civilizations of ancient Africa. A kingdom with a fascinating history, which was able to compete in terms of art and architecture with its Egyptian neighbor, notably building numerous pyramids and developing a unique writing.

Directed by Alexandre Heboyan (Mune: Guardian of the Moon), Asterix and the Kingdom of Nubia will therefore offer a story not adapted from an existing album by Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny. This is written by the screenwriter duos Matthieu Delaporte / Alexandre de la Patellière (The Count of Monte Cristo), and Mathieu Leblanc / Thomas Mansuy (the series Panda, The Purple Rivers).

In terms of casting, Christian Clavier returns once again to give his voice to Asterix, alongside François Xavier-Demaison as Obélix. Bernard Alane also gives his stamp to Panoramix and Issa Doumbia double Duplicatha.

This Asterix adventure in black Africa is produced by M6 and SND, and has a nice budget of 32.94 million euros. The animation is produced by the Superprod Animation studio, which has already worked on children’s series Underdog And Vet Academy and for the film Castle Life.

If the animation style is similar to films The Domain of the Gods (2014) and The Secret of the Magic Potion (2018), animated at the time by Mikros Animation and of which it is intended to be a direct sequel, the most observant will have noticed that the design of the characters has slightly evolved… for better or for worse. A more “cartoony” style and animation that will not please everyone.
