The subscription cost of online services (streaming, press, game, etc.) has continued to increase over the years. To continue to take advantage of it without breaking the bank, many users go through account sharing services, such as Spliiit. This system thus allows the holder of an account with several places to benefit the strangers of the latter, while sharing the costs. Practical when you do not find relatives to share an account, while Spliiit obviously takes a commission in the operation.

Only here, several players in the sector do not see this practice with a good eye. This is the case with Netflix and Disney+, who recently have muscular their anti-sharing policy of accounts on their own service, but also Apple (Apple TV+Apple Arcade, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple One). According to the informed, the three American companies would once again have gone to attack the French service.

The counterattack empire

Recall that in 2021 the trio, then grouped within the ACE anti -power coalition (Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment), already attacked Spliiit. The entity requested the withdrawal of references to its services, and even the deactivation of subscribers’ accounts. Without response from the person concerned, the case was brought in summary proceedings before the Paris court.

There, faced with accusations of unfair competition, parasitism and complicity in violation of brands and general conditions of use, Spliiit defended. But faced with a file deemed too complex, especially around the definition of what exactly a home is in the CGUs of Netflix, Apple TV+ and Disney+, the court invited the parties to better appeal to the bottom. Thing done without surprise by the accusation in April 2024.

Spliiit is not a parasite.

Jonathan Lalinec, CEO of Spliiit

But before the hearing which should be organized by the end of 2025, the court asked the interested parties to participate in mediation in order to try to find an agreement. The two groups concerned being obviously well camped on their respective positions, there is no doubt that this will again end up before a judge.

In the meantime, the CEO of Spliiit Jonathan Lalinec seems confident: “Many things have evolved since the start of this case on the side of Disney and Netflix, in particular, since these platforms have set up sharing options without using the expression of a home, by additional subscribers. We will explain that these actors will not be able to prohibit us from references offers, because we are totally in the nails today.” The manager also adds that “Spliiit is not a parasite, but allows you to sell more offers”. In Europe, 1.6 million users are claimed by Spliiit, including 1 million in France.
